During Super Bowl week, telephone records from Parcells' New Orleans hotel room revealed a party line of calls back and forth between the Patriots coach and the Jets headquarters in Hempstead, New York. By the time Luther Vandross belted out his Super Bowl National Anthem Parcells had a deal in place to leave the Patriots to become the Jets head coach the following season. After the 35-21 loss to Green Bay, Parcells didn't even take the team flight back to New England. Star running back Curtis Martin followed Parcells to New York thus planting the seeds for the rivalry you see today.
Bill Belichick, a long time Parcells assistant with both the Giants and Patriots, would join his mentor in New York. Bob Kraft thought long and hard about hiring Belichick as Parcells successor, but with his close ties to Parcells, he felt he could not take the risk. Kraft would wind up settling for a now notable flameout named Pete Carroll. While the Patriots began to look lazy and complacent under their new coach, the Pats old boss was back in the swamps of Jersey rebuilding the Jets. Never one to stay in the same position for too long, Parcells retired from the sidelines after the 1999 season, appointing Belichick as the team's new coach.
