The Dragons endured a very poor campaign last season after being engulfed in the suspension scandals involving a couple of key players such as Hulk. The loss proved crucial as FC Porto fell away from the title race and saw arch rivals Benfica eventually take their crown away.
Villas Boas presided over some measure of revenge last week when Porto beat Benfica 2-0 in the Portuguese Super Cup which could hand them a certain psychological edge. The manager wants nothing less than the title this time to restore the club back to the pinnacle of the sport in the Portugal.
“We want to end the season with the title in our hands,” Villas Boas said.
“We played with responsibility, inspiration and want to keep winning.” the manager described the win over Benfica last week.
The 24-time league champions will begin with the clash against Naval which would appear straightforward on paper. The club continue to make shrewd acquisitions on the transfer market and should be Benfica’s main rivals for the title this time, ahead of Braga who finished second the last time round.
