This match for the group C of the World Cup between England and Algeria will take place at the Green Point Stadium on Friday 18 June 2010, kick-off set for 7:30 PM. This fixture will be played by these two sides in the knowledge that failure to win would leave them both seriously wounded. There is no room for error for England in Cape Town. The Algerians offered very little in their 1-0 defeat against Slovenia and looked even worse when they lost a friendly against Ireland in Dublin last month. Given the sensation of despair that followed the opening draw with the United States, Fabio Capello’s side might have preferred to face Algeria right after the draw of last Saturday.

Should England lose or draw this second match, the likelihood is that they would be left with the unwanted obligation to beat a stubborn Slovenia side in order to avoid an early exit from the tournament. Midfielder Gareth Barry is set to start for England, having recovered from the ankle ligament damage he sustained.
Jamie Carragher is expected to play in place of injured defender Ledley King, while goalkeeper Robert Green appears likely to keep his place.

Algeria goalkeeper Faouzi Chaouchi might miss out the game through injury. Chaouchi had been told by coach Rabah Saadane he would start but he sprained his left knee.

Algeria would be all but eliminated on Friday if they suffer a second successive defeat. They are, just like England, suffering the effects of a costly goalkeeping blunder in their opening game, when Faouzi Chaouchi allowed a weak shot from Slovenia’s Robert Koren to travel into the net. Chaouchi is doubtful but reportedly will start if fit, having been given a vote of confidence from his coach. England’s Robert Green could have hoped for a similar gesture from Fabio Capello following his mistake against the United States.

Algeria have been ineffective in attack as of late, with their only goal scored in the last six matches coming from the penalty spot. They mustered a mere two shots on target playing against Slovenia, offering rather little to suggest they will ruin Capello’s 64th birthday celebration. Algeria’s 3-0 friendly defeat against the Republic of Ireland squad in Dublin last month highlighted a permanent weakness in the Desert Foxes ability to defend well against the crosses that fall into their own penalty area.
