Lyon Tamer?
It’s mixed injury news for Lyon. Leading scorer Lisandro Lopez was able to take part in the final team training on Tuesday, and though his appearance had been doubtful, it now appears he will start. Bafetimbi Gomis is the most likely replacement if Lopez is unable to go. Mathieu Bodmer, Jean-Alain Boumsong and Francois Clerc will also be missing for Lyon, and this will cause some defensive shuffling. Lyon will likely revert back to their back 4 of the group stage, with Jeremy Toulalan slotting in next to Cris in central defense, but it creates a murky situation for their midfield selection. You will find analysis with much greater depth at the Lyon Offside’s excellent match preview.
Red Squad
Mark van Bommel and Holger Badstuber are suspended for accumulated yellows, and there isn’t much doubt that we’ll see Danijel Pranjic and Diego Contento as their replacments, respectively. While there is undoubtedly a risk in playing Contento due to his inexperience, his offensive prowess may be underestimated by Lyon if he is able to go forward in support with any frequency. It appears that all systems are go based on Tuesday’s reports on Franck Ribery, and one hopes he can keep his mind off Whoregate and every other distaction, and bring his all around game. Although Olic has done a nice job of dropping back to help Contento out, it will benefit Bayern greatly if Ribery plays an all-around match. There’s less doubt about Pranjic, who filled in admirably for Schweinsteiger against Man U. Nevertheless, the fill-ins overall will have to track Miralem Pjanic carefully as he will likely be the most dangerous player on the field for Lyon. Pranjic will be told to simply look for his name misspelled and cut off his progress.
*Miroslav Klose, who was out of the squad due to a gastrointestinal problem over the weekend, will be back and available. But if we need Klose in this one, we know the first 70 minutes won’t have gone too well. The bench is likely to look like this: Rensing, Alaba, Altintop, Gomez, Görlitz. Klose, Tymoshchuk.
