Everton’s Tim Cahill proved his worth once again last weekend when his late goal proved a dramatic winner over a Blackburn Rovers side that was unwilling to concede easily.
The Toffees’ 2-3 victory at Ewood Park sees them firmly in command of eighth place in the league, which seems their likely terminus when they end their season in a few weeks time.
The campaign has not been an easy one for manager David Moyes and his men. Injuries to key players have dogged the Toffees since early on and their potential to threaten the upper echelon clubs by continuing into this season with the fine run they had last year has always seemed a beat off.
England international defender Phil Jagielka was out injured for much of the campaign and influential midfielder Marouane Fellaini suffered a season-ending ankle injury in their 1-0 loss to rivals Liverpool in the Merseyside derby in February.
Fulham are exactly mid-table at 10th and although they are unlikely to go far up or down in the remaining games of the campaign, they still find themselves in contention for European silverware. They played Hamburger SV to a 0-0 draw in Hamburg on Thursday in the first leg of their Europa League Semi-Final.
The Cottagers are on a decent run of form with two wins and three draws in their last five games in all competitions.
Last time out against Everton the Cottagers carried the day with a 2-1 victory at Craven Cottage. Neither side has much at stake this weekend other than pride, although there is still an outside chance of Everton landing a Europa League berth if all the stars in the firmament align for them during the final few weeks of the campaign.
